Lauren Walker and Brisbane Johson are new, young models taking the world by storm. I met Lauren and Brisbane in Bradenton Florida at IMG Fashion camp and was immediately impressed. They both were so poised and looked every bit strong, and confident. When the camp finished I knew I wanted to feature them on The Window Shop. This is their testimony on the modeling world so far.

Brianna: What made you interested in modeling?
Lauren: I’ve always loved the creative process and modeling gives me the opportunity to bring a vision to life and work with/ meet so many inspiring people. I grew up reading the different issues of VOGUE and making mood boards.
Brisbane: Growing up I always had an eye for fashion and design and I’ve also always loved photography. I grew up dancing so movement and posing was second nature to me. Modeling was the perfect way for me to appreciate all of those things and I immediately fell in love with the job.
Brianna: Wow. I think it's incredible how you both developed a passion so young. I think that things such as dance are very inspiring. Being so young I think it's very admirable how you both stuck to your dream. While we're on the topic of dreams and interest can you share what it was like breaking into the business, and do you have any stories you can share about the process?
Brisbane: Breaking into the modeling business is tough because you have no idea where to start. For me, it started with lots and lots of agency open calls. I realized that I couldn’t book myself jobs so I needed an agent who could do that for me. In the beginning, you’ll hear a thousand no’s before you finally get a yes and that’s a very important thing to keep in mind. For anyone breaking into the business do not give up. You may feel defeated but just know that the perfect opportunity will come to you in the right situation, at the right time, when you are ready.
Lauren: Personally, I wouldn’t consider myself successful yet, but I’ve definitely learned that the business requires thick skin as well as patience. I have faced rejection, like every aspiring model, but every ‘no’ makes a single ‘yes’ that much sweeter.
Brianna: You both said something that I think is very important. You talked about how every 'no', although discouraging, is not an excuse to drop out of the game. I think that is so valuable, 'no' doesn't mean to stop, it means to keep going. I'm sure your first 'yes' was very rewarding. Following you both on social media, I am always amazed at your posts. They're very interesting and I appreciate the time it takes to upkeep your appearances on social media. Do you have a favorite post?
Lauren: Thank you. I honestly don’t have a favorite because I’ve been lucky enough to have great experiences with every photographer that I’ve worked with. It’s so inspiring to see the plethora of styles and moods that each photographer specializes in. In my traveling photos, I try to capture the essence of a place through my style or choice of background.
Brisbane: This is such a hard question because every photo I post has a memory behind it but if I had to choose it would be this one (see image to the right).
This is my favorite post because I talk briefly about my scoliosis journey. I’ve always wanted to be super genuine with my posts and actually show people the real me through them. Scoliosis is a huge part of me and I’ve connected with so many people who also have scoliosis all because of that post. It is so important to me to connect with and hopefully help other people who are going through the same thing that I went through and it’s all because of one post on Instagram. I love that social media has given us the ability to connect like that.
Brianna: I find that so inspiring what you said, Brisbane about that one post leading you to help and reach out to so many people going through the same thing as you. Lauren, I find what you said about working with new photographers and each of them giving you a new experience so interesting, I'm sure that the takeaway is huge. Now, you've both worked with very exciting brands and people. Lauren, I know you had the opportunity to walk in Carolina Herrera's Fall 2017 Runway show and Brisbane you've been featured on Vogueitalia.com--can you talk about what those experiences were like?
Lauren: I’m so thankful that I had the opportunity to model Carolina Hererra’s designs. I wore two outfits- one was a beautiful high-neck blue dress with yellow, floral detailing and then the other one was a pale pink button-down dress with pink flowers and a light blue belt. I actually had a wardrobe malfunction right before I walked in the show and had to be sewn into the first dress. Everything worked out in the end and it was such an amazing experience to meet part of the team and learn more about the business behind the fashion industry.
Brisbane: My first time ever doing any modeling was at a local fashion show. Fashion shows are super fun because you get to watch the whole process come together from the hair and makeup to the clothes, and then to the runway. Walking for designers is what made me fall in love with modeling because I love getting to be a part of their creation and helping their vision come to life. It’s also very similar to shoots where I get to help a photographers vision come to life. I love to be pushed outside of my comfort zone and I love getting that one shot that just stands out from all of the others. Those unique shots are the ones that have been featured on Vogueitalia.com. It’s an awesome feeling when you get to create something so special with a photographer and then share it for the world to appreciate as well.
Brianna: That to me is so fascinating. Being able to really see and experience so many things in the fashion industry from one opportunity. I would venture to say that it seems like you've both picked up a few things from these experiences, have they impacted your personal style at all and can you, in three words, describe your personal style?
Brisbane: Relaxed, edgy, and a little sporty!
Lauren: I would describe my personal style as comfortable, cool, and simple.
Brianna: Very nice. It's been such a pleasure talking to you both. I have just one last question for you, where do you see yourself in ten years?
Brisbane: Life is crazy and changes so fast. If you would have asked me 10 years ago what I would be doing now I wouldn’t have said modeling and that wouldn’t have even been a possibility that crossed my mind. I would love to continue to pursue modeling for as long as possible and see where it takes me. I have a lot of goals that I’ve set modeling wise that I hope to accomplish but I never ever know what the future holds! If this all ended tomorrow I would just be grateful for all the opportunities I have been blessed with so far and the experiences that I’ve gotten to have because of this crazy career.
Lauren: In ten years, I see myself happy and working in the fashion industry. Whether that’s through modeling or more behind the scenes- marketing, styling, or buying- I’m unsure. But I definitely see myself working in the creative field and loving my job.
Brianna: I love that both of you have a strong passion and drive. I wish you both tremendous success and look forward to seeing you grace the covers of a magazine someday soon.
